A press release sent by the garment manufacturers' organization BGMEA has informed that only 17 more companies need to get the certificate to make a double century in the construction of environmentally friendly factories in Bangladesh.
Currently, Bangladesh has the highest number of eco-friendly clothing and textile mills than any other country in the world. According to BGMEA data, out of 183 garment and textile factories in Bangladesh, 60 got Platinum, 109 Gold, 10 Silver and 4 certified certificates.
Another five hundred units are in the process of achieving the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
To be certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the world’s greenest building certification bodies established in 1993, a project must meet the highest standards from construction to manufacturing under the supervision of the USGBC.
There are a total of 110 points for fulfilling the 9 conditions for the LEAD certificate. Among these, more than 80 points are required for ‘Lead Platinum’, 60-79 points for ‘Lead Gold’, 50-59 points for ‘Lead Silver’ and 40-49 points for ‘Lead Certified’.
But unfortunately, it is true that green factories are an expensive process at the initial stage and international retailers and brands always put pressure to apparel exporters on being compliant but they are not ready to pay the price.
Despite the challenges, apparel entrepreneurs in Bangladesh are investing in green buildings and adopting eco-friendly production methods. Now is the time for retailers, brands and their customers to create awareness to pay for green initiatives because it has a cost.
