BATEXPO-2010 Brings flurry of orders and spreads hope for future

The three-day long ‘Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition’, better known as BATEXPO of 2010,  organised by the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association(BGMEA)  started from 25 November and came to a successful end in 27 November at Bangaubandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka. As an association of the largest manufacturing sector BGMEA rightly shifted this year’s BATEXPO to BICC from previous years’ venue The Pen Pacific Sonargaon. This time the venue can accommodate huge spectators and participants. It was indeed a grand gathering of the garment makers, support survice providers, buyers and all associates of this industry. BICC became a get together place with grand cultural events. Seminar was presenting the facts and figures of the sector with the future prospect forecast.

The Opening:

“The government is providing little support for market diversification and in this regard it will give a package worth $1.0 billion for the small and medium entrepreneurs,” Finance Minister AMA Muhith said while he was declaring the BATEXPO 2010 open. As an intention to come up with some good news for the garment makers while their contribution for the economy were being praised by most other distinguished guests. Mr. Muhith got the opportunity to inaugurate the event for the foreign trips of the prime minister. Normally each year prime minister be the chief guest in the inauguration. The minister added, these entrepreneurs will be kept put of the bonded warehouse facility and they will enjoy all the facilities entitled to them until June 30 next year. Quoting the electricity crisis, the minister said Bangladesh will get 2000MW power more by 2011. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Commerce Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan, Labour and Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam and Textile and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique, were present at the inaugural ceremony.

openingEarlier, BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy drew the government’s attention to the cent per cent disbursement of the declared stimulus package for smooth implementation of the recently declared wage for the workers. “The government should implement its announced package as early as possible as it becomes a big challenge for 60-65 per cent small and medium entrepreneurs to implement the new wage structure,” Mr Murshedy said. There are 137 stalls from 87 companies including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and Brazil in the fair.

Recent surge in export is not only the impact of product price hike:

outsideThe garment industry leaders are expecting better and more positive responses from foreign buyers from this year’s display. Bangladesh exported knitwear worth $ 2.88 billion in the first four months of the current fiscal year, 29.63 per cent higher than the export goal and 37.97 percent higher than the corresponding period of last fiscal year.

Woven garment worth $ 2.34 billion were exported in this period, 13.70 per cent higher than the target and 39.45 per cent higher than last year’s export during this period. Though with the increment of cotton price the garment price is increasing the figures are natural to bout but in terms of volume also the export has raised from the same period of last year. But of course the raise is not as significant as the value figures present.

The Closing:

closingBNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on 27 November alleged that attempt is underway to create anarchy and indiscipline in the country’s RMG sector which is already beset by gas and electricity crisis. “If indiscipline is created, country’s driving-force of economy (RMG sector) cannot be protected. It’s the government’s responsibility to ensure law and order in the apparels sector,” she said. Khaleda was speaking as chief guest at the closing ceremony of BATEXPO-2010 at Bangabandhu International Conference Center here in the afternoon.

BNP standing committee members M Shamsul Islam and MK Anwar, BNP chairperson’s adviser Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP senior joint secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and BGMEA second vice president M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, first vice president Nasir Uddin Chowdhury and vice president M Siddiqur Rahman also addressed the function, chaired by BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy. The opposition leader thanked the BGMEA for accepting the new wage structures for the RMG workers. “I hope it will be implemented properly in all factories,” she said.
