BD apparel export to US jumps 53.54% in Jan-Aug 22

Bangladesh continues to increase apparel export to the US in the first eight months (January to August) of 2022. According to the U.S.A.’s official data source ‘Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA)’ released the latest apparel import statistics, USA’s apparel import from Bangladesh increased by 53.54%.

Bangladeshi apparel manufacturers shipped apparel goods worth $6.64 billion which was $4.32 billion in the same period of 2021. However, US imports from the world grew by 37.35% to $69.27 billion in the first eight months of 2022, compared to $50.43 billion in the same period of 2021.

Bangladesh remains third in position having a 9.42% share in the apparel market of the North American country.

According to the Otexa data, Bangladesh earned $928.56 million in August which shows a sharp increase from July. Bangladesh’s single-month apparel export earnings from the US were $755.94 million in January, $688.47 million in February, $1.03 billion in March, $820.52 million in April, $815 million in May, $906 million in June and $693.22 million in July of this year.

However, the country's manufacturers opined that there is a gap of two months in the Otexa data and the changes in the global situation due to economic instability, inflationary pressures and other issues have resulted in the decrease in orders turning negative and the situation may increase in September and extend in the following months.

After 13 consecutive months of positive growth, Bangladesh's exports of goods amounted to $3.9 billion dollars in September, which is 6.25 percent less than the same period last year according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data. According to the manufacturers, the purchase orders have declined significantly by nearly 30% in the last few months.

According to the Otexa data, China continues to be the largest supplier of textiles and clothing to the US with a 24.75% share and exported $15.55 billion in the January-August of 2022 from $11.33 billion in the same period of 2021.

Vietnam with a 13.99% share, secures the second position and exports worth $12.80 billion from 9.58 billion in the same period of 2021.

India ranks fourth with apparel exports worth $4.16 billion, a 56.9% increase from $2.65 billion with a market share of 5.68% in the first eight months of 2022.

US RMG imports from Indonesia rose 56.47% to $3.91 billion in January-August 2022 while imports from Cambodia rose 51.64% to $3.04 billion in the same period, making them fifth and sixth in terms of market share of 5.54% and 4.41% respectively.
