BGMEA courtesy call to newly appointed Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority and Customs Commissioner

BGMEA, Customs and Chittagong Port Authority will work together to speed up shipment and export of goods to overcome the downturn in the garment industry

On 16th February 2021, the newly appointed Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan and Cast House, Dr. Fakhrul Alam, Chittagong Commissioner had a courtesy call from BGMEA President Rubana Huq and a delegation of BGMEA team in their office separately.

Rubana Huq said, “Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry has suffered a devastating blow due to the global COVID-19 crisis.”

The Pandemic’s widespread negative impact on the national economy is already visible. Efforts are on to revive the garment industry with the cooperation of all including the government to overcome the situation, she said.

To this end, Huq expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the Customs and Chittagong Port Authority for their unwavering support during the difficult times of the COVID-19 crisis. Rubana Huq requested the Customs and Chittagong Port Authority to ensure speedy unloading of RMG goods and timely export to the buyer to overcome the ongoing recession.

The newly-appointed Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan said the RMG industry is playing a very important role in the economy of Bangladesh. To continue the growth of exports, the port authorities are carrying out import-export-related activities smoothly despite various limitations.

Shahjahan emphasized the use of Pangaon port to reduce import costs and reduce traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and outlined various plans for infrastructural development and capacity building of the port. To this end, he sought the cooperation of all stakeholders including BGMEA.

Customs House, Chittagong Commissioner M. Fakhrul Alam said, “Custom House, Chittagong is conducting round-the-clock activities to help the business community affected by the COVID-19 situation and to maintain economic growth.”

Among others present during the courtesy call were BGMEA First Vice President Mohammad Abdus Salam, Senior Vice President Faisal Samad, Vice President (Finance) Abdur Rahim Firoz, Director Khandaker Belayet Hossain and Former Vice President ABM Samsuddin.
