BGMEA election and expectations of its members

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is a nationwide trading body of Bangladeshi garment manufacturers that plays an important role in generating foreign trade. It was established in 1983 with 12 members. At present, BGMEA has about four thousand registered garment factories.

The BGMEA is governed by 35 elected boards of directors. This election is held as per T. O. rules 1994 and according to the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of Bangladesh.

Recently Farooq Hasan, former Vice-President of BGMEA and Managing Director of Giant Group and panel leader of BGMEA biennial elections announced that the BGMEA Election 2021-2023 for 35 posts of the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association will be held on Sunday, the 04th April 2021. BGMEA is dedicated to promoting and facilitating the garment industry through policy advocacy to the government, service to its members, ensuring workers’ rights and social loyalty in factories. Every garments industrialist has a vision for the BGMEA Election 2021-2023.

BGMEA is like a guardian for the garments’ industrialists and employees. The epidemic has already broken the garment industry in half. Order cancellation, order retention, and job loss are problems that have already been addressed. Now entrepreneurs want a sustainable solution from the future elected board of directors.

Sheikh H M Mustafiz Managing Director of Cute Dress Industry Ltd as an entrepreneur in the garment industry asked the garment industrialist to review what kind of services members would like to receive from the association and what members expect from the newly elected representatives to meet the challenges of the future.

Many garment industrialists are hoping that BGMEA will do more in terms of market potential and innovation. Azharul Islam, Head of Marketing and Merchandising of RK Group, suggested giving the priority to planning a sustainable market. After 2013, the expenses of the industries have increased by 15%, where the prices are decreasing day by day.

The epidemic has widened the gap between production costs and buyers’ prices. During the epidemic, the price of yarn has been rising for the last three months, the price of gas and other resources has been rising but the buyers are not increasing any price. Farooq Hasan has promised to fix the strategy to reverse the current situation of the garment industry for various reasons including the COVID-19 epidemic.

Setting up flexible policies can also help to reduce costs. Cost can be minimized by reducing the cost of renewals and additional licenses by the government office from BGMEA leaders. Improvement is needed to get simple and paperless cash incentives. These flexible policies can be easily formulated with the help of the government. However, the epidemic has pushed the government hard.

So, it is difficult to draw the attention of the government during this epidemic. So the BGMEA election panel has selected potential candidates who are in important government positions. Farooq Hasan said “It simply came to our notice then. The leaders elected from the election panel now hold many important positions in the government. As a result, if selected, it will be easier for me to work with their help.

In the case of productivity development, Shekh Ershad Uddin Managing Director at Leaf Grade Casualwear Limited suggests that BGMEA can create an Innovation Hub where our members can get the idea to develop soft skills for productivity improvements and sustainable development. So that other owners can get ideas to implement it and largely Bangladesh RMG industries can be competitive in this challenging situation. So we do not have to leave remittances of 10 billion US dollars abroad, we do not have to hire foreigners for this sector.

The industrialist is looking for a sustainable change from the future leader of BGMEA. In the upcoming elections, BGMEA members expect the new leader to work on sustainable markets, flexible policies, setting new strategies for changing the situation, and developing skilled manpower.

Current BGMEA president Rubana Huq is running again. Rubana Huq, managing director of Mohammadi Group made significant leadership during her BGMEA presidency. She wisely managed the epidemic situation. She called for the victory of the 35-member forum panel in the upcoming elections at a function held at the Navy Convention Center in Chittagong on 16th Feb 2021.
