BGMEA hands over Tk. 50 crore to BEZA for establishing a garment park

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Md. Siddiqur Rahman handed over a cheque of Tk. 50 crore to the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury for establishing a garment park at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN).

Siddiqur Rahman handed over the cheque in a meeting held at BEZA office today. In the meeting, they discussed the progress of the garment park at BSMSN.

BGMEA Vice President (Finance) Mohammed Nasir and BEZA Executive Member Md. Harunur Rashid were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, BGMEA and Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) signed an agreement to lease out 500 acres of land at BSMSN for setting up a well-planned readymade garment factory park in the Mirsarai Economic Zone of Chattogram.

Paban Chowdhury said, “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar is one of the most suitable sites for setting up industrial establishments in the country.”

He also said that it is along the strategic location of Dhaka-Chattogram industrial corridor as business and living cost are significantly lower at Mirsarai as well as in Chattogram division than other developing cities in the world.

BGMEA sought the land from BEZA for relocating the factories randomly established at different places in Dhaka. BGMEA has a plan to invest $2 billion for setting up several RMG and garment accessories factories at this park to generate employment for 5 lakh people.

BGMEA Garments Park is located beside the Mirsarai EZ 2A and Mirsarai 1st Phase. Already, BEZA has appointed contractor for developing this site.

Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) is developing the industrial city ‘BSMSN’ in the country’s southeastern part with a view to encouraging rapid economic development through increase and diversification of industry, employment, production and export.

The whole industrial city is being developed on around 30,000 acres of land touching three upazilas- Mirsarai, Sitakundu and Sonagazi- under Chattogram and Feni districts respectively. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid its foundation stone on 28 February 2016.

The city is expected to create employment opportunities for 1.5 million people within next 15 years and ensure US$15 billion export from different industrial enclave.
