Textile Today: Bangladesh’s denim industry has grown tremendously in the US and EU markets, does the industry need to increase its local mills?

Engr. Shafiqur Rahman: Bangladesh is still sourcing fabric from China, India, and Vietnam. Bangladesh’s fabric manufacturers are increasing their capacity and investing in new factories. But the number of workers is not increasing like in factories. There is a labor crisis as the denim industry is new. However, Bangladesh Denim has a reputation for sustainable washing and factory compliance. Bangladesh has the largest number of green garment factories in the world. Entrepreneurs are focusing more on factory compliance rather than building new infrastructure. Sustainability and compliance issues are attracting more buyers these days.

Textile Today: As the denim industry grows, new buyers are ordering and old buyers are re-ordering, what are the specific reasons for this growth?

Engr. Shafiqur Rahman: Bangladesh has recovered faster from the epidemic than other countries. Bangladesh ranks 5th in the global Covid-19 recovery index. Bangladesh’s denim and RMG industry competitors, such as China, India, and Vietnam, are still far behind in the recovery index rankings. As a result of this rapid recovery, there are opportunities for some new and huge orders for the denim industry in Bangladesh. Also, the denim industry in Bangladesh has proved its capacity and quality which is the key to the growth of this industry.
