Italy still dominates EU exports, despite negative growth rates

The revenue of the pantyhose and tights market in the European Union amounted to $3.1B in 2018, stabilizing at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).

In 2018, the pantyhose and tights exports in the European Union totaled 39M pairs, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, pantyhose exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, pantyhose exports stood at $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. Over the period under review, pantyhose exports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of exports peaked at $1.6B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy was the main exporting country with an export of around 17M pairs, which resulted at 44% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2018, average annual rates of growth with regard to pantyhose exports from Italy stood at -2.7%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+21.3%), Spain (+16.9%), Slovenia (+15.0%), Croatia (+9.5%), Austria (+6.3%), Romania (+5.7%) and France (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($486M) remains the largest pantyhose supplier in the European Union, comprising 43% of total pantyhose exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Croatia ($135M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 8.4% share.

In Italy, pantyhose exports declined by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2007-2018. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+16.3% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).

Imports in the EU

In 2018, the imports of pantyhose and tights in the European Union totaled 66M pairs, rising by 5% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2007 to 2018.

In value terms, pantyhose imports stood at $1.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2007 to 2018.
