Garment industry plays a great role in adverse economy: Information Minister

Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said that the garment industry is making a great contribution to keep the country’s economy running amid the global recession. He said this while addressing the chief guest at the BGAPMEA Export Trophy-2023 awarding ceremony at Bashundhara International Convention City in the capital on Saturday evening.

He said, ‘Garments and accessories industry is playing a huge role in moving the country forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, even in the midst of the global recession.

At the time of independence, the contribution of the industrial sector to the gross national product of the country was 5 to 6 percent. It is now about 35 percent. Here too, ready-made garments and allied industries have a big role to play.

Emphasizing on the role of entrepreneurs in the development of the nation in the modern age, the information minister said, “In addition to the development of economic and physical infrastructure, industrial entrepreneurs and businessmen must take new initiatives to face the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution and the formation of a developed humanitarian state.”

Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) president Mohammad Moazzem Hossain Moti presided over the award ceremony on the concluding day of the four-day international fair ‘GAPEXPO’ organized by BGAPMEA. Export Promotion Bureau Vice Chairman AHM Ahsan and BGMEA Senior Vice President SM Mannan Kochi spoke as special guests on the occasion.

The information minister presented Reaz Uddin Al Mamun, Chairman, Epyllion Limited; Asadur Rahman Sikder, Director Montrims Limited; and Neaz Rahman Shaqib, Managing Director Simtex Industries Limited as first, second and third for direct contribution to exports and the women entrepreneur trophy to Noor E Nazneen Khan, the owner of the Green House.

Also, out of 1,900 members of the association, a total of nine won the ‘Dreamed Export Trophy’ in small, medium and large categories.
