GOTS Version 6.0 was released on March 19, 2020, 3 years after the launching of the 5.0 version and 15 years after the launching of the 1st edition. Under the latest version of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), certified users will have to maintain ethical business behavior, honesty, prevention of corruption.
Organic Trade Association organized an online discussion on ‘GOTS Version 6.0 & the U.S. Market’ on 22nd March 2020. An overview of GOTS including updates on the changes in Version 6.0, organic labeling of fiber and textiles in the U.S., and a review of the current market of GOTS in the United States was presented in the webinar.
Rahul Bhajekar, GOTS Managing Director and Lori Wyman, GOTS North America Representative was on the digital expert panel, together with Gwendolyn Wyard, Organic Trade Association’s Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Affairs.
The GOTS certification helps the UN ensure compliance with each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. More than 3 million workers working in GOTS-certified facilities were reported in 2019 by 17 recognized independent certification firms.
Lori Wyman, GOTS North America Representative of GOTS explained the situation and current state of the GOTS market increase. Countries and regions with the largest growth in percentage terms include Bangladesh with 29 percent, North America with 25 percent, and Pakistan with 23 percent and South Korea with 23 percent.
In terms of total numbers, the highest increase is reported from India (315), followed by Bangladesh (155) and Europe (98). The number of chemicals on the positive list shows an increase of 13% to 20.231 from 778 suppliers. The GOTS positive list contains the trade names of approved chemicals that must be used by their textile processors for their GOTS certified production.
Based on the recommendations of the Standards Committee, the GOTS Advisory Council has approved the release of GOTS version 6.0 for implementation by March 2022.
It was first decided implement on March 2021. But seeing the effect of COVID-19 pandemic the date of implementation of GOTS version 6.0 has been changed. Chapters were replaced by sections. The international working group changed to ‘Global Standard Gmbh’. Rahul Bhajekar explained the GOTS Version 6.0 in his session and gave the details on these topics:
