Inspire buyer by mood board

For an apparel buying house (commission agent) marketing is a very much complicated phenomenon. In particular market like Bangladesh has numerous buyers’ liaison offices like H&M, Adidas, C&A, Levis, VF Asia, M&S, Nike, Tesco, GAP, Target etc. Due to that reason, a local buying house needs to search other buyers excluding them which is undoubtedly a challenging task.

Figure: An Inspiration mood board is nothing but just a collection of various items, as photographs, drawings, words, fabric swatches, paint chips, and textures, used to visualize specifics in the design of a project or event etc.

Some of the buying houses (BH) are working with some renowned brand who has the liaison office in BD like LPP, BigW, Target Australia, Nike, Wal-Mart etc. But they are doing it directly, not through to Bangladesh liaison offices. You may think why buyers are doing that? Actually, it is their strategic decisions to purchase 20-30% goods from headquarters. It would be from direct factory through buying house. However, the exiting liaison office has created some barriers for that buying house, so, they cannot do their regular works smoothly.

In this reality, how can a buying house start marketing? How to on board a new buyer? These are really vital questions for a new marketer or a buying house owner.

We see maximum buying houses do not maintain proper concentration in R&D especially, in fabrics, product design, fashion shows or any new innovation and also forget to highlight his own running development, running production, shipment items and send inspiration to the buyers.

This article will focus on sending inspiration to buyer as an effective marketing tool.

Inspiration or mood boards

Sending inspiration to get buyer attention is a wonderful item. Every season a buying house can send inspiration mood boards to the buyer to make them understand their fashion sense, fashion awareness, present fabrics development and upcoming products in the market. An Inspiration mood board is nothing but just a collection of various items, as photographs, drawings, words, fabric swatches, paint chips, and textures, used to visualize specifics in the design of a project or event, and often created after the general look and feel of the design has been established with a mood board. Mood board is almost similar things to create an inspiration board.

An inspiration board is a collection of various items, as scenic snapshots, song lyrics, and mementos, used to evoke a desired feeling, style, or ambiance for a project or event, and often fashioned as a starting point from which to create an inspiration board.

There are lots of ways to inspire designers but here we will discuss only three ways that are available in our hand. End of the day all inspiration turns into fabrics and ornaments which make garments.

We can make a mood board through our running development:

Maybe we are developing 15 to 20 fabrics and huge trims for the final garments. We can fabricate a mood board with those items. Remember you have to present it in a smart way. More or less, a mood board may be contained the below information:

  • Final Garment Photo
  • Fabrics details
  • Fabrics composition (changeable): 95% Cotton 5% Spandex, 10 Oz
  • Multiple end use: Like lady’s bottom, sex short, ladies skirt, tops etc.
  • Color probabilities: Blue, Ash, pink, yellow etc.
  • Seasons: AW or SS
  • Production lead time: 90 or 120 days

Decide on a theme and layout

Brainstorm about the theme you want to create with your board. You can start with a theme including color palettes and design elements. Get as much information from your buyers as you can on the look and feel they desire.

You can use design elements that will be in the actual project. For example, for any product design, you could grab images of the fabric, accessories, thread etc. along with a sample of the product to see how everything looks together.

New development fabrics from mills

Every year the fabric malls arrange exhibitions to show their new development and product ranges and they also make some prototype products with the newly developed fabrics. So that we can collect that fabrics from the mill and take some nice photos from the exhibition. After that, we can make a wonderful mood board for designers which may inspire them to work with us.

Running production or shipping sample

The products are running in production or already ready to ship, we can create a mood board by those items, which is more available in our house.

Share your mood board online

Once you are happy with the look of your created mood board, share it. See what others think as they may have suggestions to add more creativity. You may even inspire your merchandisers to create their own boards. Collaboration on boards can be a fun project for teams too.

Mood boards are fun but do not take them lightly. They are a powerful creativity tool of marketing whether you make a mood board online or off.
