Need PM's cooperation to continue the pace of RMG industry’s growth

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan has sought the cooperation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the development of this sector through uninterrupted gas supply, along with the impact of geopolitical tensions on garment exports.

He asked for this cooperation when a delegation of the organization met with her at the Prime Minister's office on February 11.

The delegation included Tipu Munshi, former Minister of Commerce and former president of BGMEA; Abdus Salam Murshedi, former President of BGMEA; Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, former President of BGMEA; Md. Siddiqur Rahman, former President and Secretary of Industry and Commerce of Awami League.

From the current board of BGMEA, SM Mannan (Kochi), senior vice president; Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice president; Shahidullah Azim, vice president; Md. Nasir Uddin, vice president; Miran Ali, vice president and Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, vice president; Barrister Shehrin Salam Oishi, Director; Barrister Vidya Amrit Khan, Director and Neela Hosne Ara, Director were also present.

The BGMEA delegation congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her absolute victory in the 12th National Assembly elections and assuming power for the fifth term as Prime Minister.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan apprised the Prime Minister about the progress made in the readymade garment industry, particularly in terms of workplace safety, environmental sustainability and workers' welfare. He also highlighted BGMEA's commitment to product diversification by moving to high-value products, emphasizing on sustainable development given by the Prime Minister.

The delegation informed the Prime Minister about the initiatives taken by BGMEA to explore new markets for exports, noting the significant increase in garment exports to non-traditional markets.

The BGMEA President also apprised the Prime Minister about the current major challenges facing the garment industry, including global trade and the impact of geopolitical tensions on Bangladesh's garment exports.

BGMEA leader expressed their gratitude for Prime Minister's timely initiatives and policy support to the garment industry during the Covid-19 pandemic. Besides, to continue the pace of growth of the industry, he requested to continue the government's policy support to meet the challenges facing the garment sector, including uninterrupted gas supply.

BGMEA believes that under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, Bangladesh will continue to move forward on the path of development, where the garment industry will play a leading role in the country's economic growth.
