A team of National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER), Bangladesh has achieved first position in the ‘Textile product innovation contest’. The contest was a part of ‘Functional Textile and Clothing Conference FTC-18’ held at IIT, Delhi, India from 9 to 12 February.
Under the conference ‘Textile product innovation contest’ was specifically planned to encourage design, innovation and product development activities amongst the youth. Prof. Lynn Boorady, University of Missouri, USA; Deepti Gupta, IIT, Delhi; Vladan Koncar, Head of Research ENSAIT, France were the main judge in Innovation Contest.
FTC proposes to be a bi-annual international event that provides an interdisciplinary platform for leading academic scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs and market stakeholders to have in-depth exchanges on the recent scientific developments, cutting-edge technologies, innovations, trends, concerns, challenges, and opportunities in the field of Functional and Smart Textiles and Clothing.
Over 220 abstracts were received from over 90 institutions of 22 countries worldwide including USA, UK Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, France, Germany and a host of European nations. From Bangladesh, two teams from two reputed Institute NITER and BUTEX were selected and participated. They participated in oral, poster presentation and Innovation Contest.
The main purpose of the contest was to identify a problem, conceptualize a solution, and convert it into a working prototype having application in medical, sports, social or any other field.
Among all the Project the team from NITER secured champion position for their project titled “Fabric-Based Touch Sensitive Pressure Sensor”.
Md. Abdullah al Rumon and Kayes Mahmud Shakil, the NITER team member, have been working on functional textile since 2015 with the assistance of their departmental teacher A.K.M. Monjurul Haque. Hasan Shahariar was the supervisor in this project. Currently, he is working as a postdoctoral researcher at NC State University, USA.
Md. Abdullah al Rumon said, “The sensor can be used as multiple switching and physiological monitoring especially for muscle monitoring.”
“The main purpose of the contest was to identify a problem, conceptualize a solution, and convert it into a working prototype having application in medical, sports, social or any other field,” he added.
“It is the first time any Bangladeshi student participated in such kind of Conference and Contest. Undoubtedly it is a big achievement and pride for NITER and as well as Bangladesh,” said a NITER professor.
