No more yellow stains

We are all familiar with them – unsightly yellow stains under the arms of light-coloured tops, which cannot be removed even by washing. A solution to this problem – which has resulted in many a favourite garment being dispatched to the bin too soon – was recently proposed by the cosmetics manufacturer Beiersdorf.

yellow_satinTheir development of the deodorant “NIVEA Invisible for Black & White” was made possible thanks to close cooperation with scientists at the Hohenstein Institute, the international textile research centre in Bönnigheim. The Hohenstein scientists led by Dr. Jan Beringer helped the pure researchers at Beiersdorf in their search for substances which leave no visible residue on textiles but also meet the quality requirements of a good deodorant and remain effective for up to 48 hours. In an exhaustive series of trials and wear tests with volunteers, the ideal combination of substances was finally identified to make this premium product that will be marketed worldwide.

The search for the next-generation deodorant began with the cause of the yellow discoloration: with conventional products, there is a chemical reaction between sweat, body fat, substances in the deodorant which penetrate the textile fibres, calcium in the water when washing and tensides in the detergent. This is also the reason why the stains are not removed by washing but in fact keep getting worse.

Thanks to the anti-yellow stain technology, for which Beiersdorf have registered the patent, the substances causing the stains do not adhere so well to the textiles and can be more easily removed. The “no white residue” technology envelops the aluminium salts in the antiperspirant so that they do not leave traces of white on dark clothing.
