Why higher study for apparel and textiles related students?
Traditionally, Bangladesh has been maintaining a tech-pack based apparel manufacturing system. Very few garments manufacturing facilities have their own fashion designing opportunities where they can design the products based on international fashion trend and consumer choice. Bangladesh has been acting as a reactive supplier rather than being an innovative partner. As a result, the country lacks fashion designers of global standard. In order to take control of the global fashion market, Bangladesh needs to ‘come up with design ideas relevant to seller’s market and turn these into a product representable to clients (UNIDO, 2014). In doing so, traditional dependency on the buyers to pay for what they want to make will be limited. Instead, the manufacturers will tell the buyers what to make and how much to pay for. In order this to happen, Bangladesh needs huge number of quality fashion designers. Students having an international fashion degree will monopoly such market.
History reveals that all the previous garments manufacturing countries switches to the fancy items, technical textiles or more sophisticated products once they gain sufficient expertise. Slowly but surely Bangladesh will tread that historic path. In that perspective, she needs more skilled manpower, especially who have research degrees.
Recent vociferous debate over factory collapse and all the unsustainable practices in the textile industry have shaken the consumer world. Today’s consumers are increasingly concerned with the manufacturing processes and conditions. In order to remain competitive in the future, BD needs to maintain a sustainable production system. Consequently, Bangladesh will need a number of Apparel and Textile related students having sustainability focus or minor.
Since Bangladesh has already been in the garments manufacturing business for around five decades, the experts from Bangladesh will need to lead the other young manufacturing countries centered on Southeast Asia in the coming days. A global degree will greatly help in this regard along with required expertise.
As discussed above, the multicultural setting, research-based education system and global network are the rare opportunities very fortunate few can experience. Besides, a graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) from a top ranked university abroad, especially from USA will give a boost to one’s professional career. Bangladeshi students have proven intelligence and talent. Culturally, they grow up solving umpteen number of personal, social and peer problems, resulting in natural mathematical and analytical ability. Therefore, having a degree from a top class university abroad should be a choice for them, not a fantasy.
