The Ministry of Commerce has recently sought advice from the Bangladesh Embassy in Beijing on strategies to increase exports of leather and leather products to China.

Meanwhile, Commercial Counselor Mohammad Mansur Uddin told the ministry that in the last 10 years, Bangladesh has exported an average of $50 million worth of leather and $16.70 million worth of shoes to China.

“Chinese buyers are keen to import high quality leather from the United States, Brazil, Italy and Australia at competitive prices instead of high quality leather from Bangladesh,” he added.

Therefore, in order to export leather to China and other global markets, slaughter machines have to be set up in urban and rural areas of Bangladesh and separate leather has to be made using the machines.

The highest volume of leather exports to China in this decade was $ 76.36 million in FY 2016-17, leather goods worth $145 million in fiscal 2015-16, and footwear export worth 33.50 million in the same fiscal.

In this regard, Uddin further said that the quality demand of Chinese importers is much higher than their proposed price, so many Bangladeshi exporters show less interest in exporting leather and leather products to China.

Although the demand for world class brand products is increasing in China but there is no outlet of Bangladeshi brand.

So, the commercial consultant suggested setting up outlets of Bangladeshi brands in China and hiring agents for marketing, promotion and advertising to increase the export of leather goods and footwear.

He also advised Bangladeshi companies to increase their participation in exhibitions in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
