Smart-Indigo™ to make a difference in sustainable denim production

Smart-Indigo™ was launched in Bangladesh in a grand seminar ‘Sustainable Denim Days’ on 23 February at a hotel in Dhaka.  At the seminar S. M. Al Masud, Founder and MD of SM Engineering Ltd. (exclusive agents of Sedo Engineering) introduced the new technology and shared his journey with Sedo Engineering.

Herbert Guebeli, Managing Director, Smart-Indigo™, elaborated on the Smart-Indigo™ technology. Distinguished guests, Bangladesh denim sector leaders, VC’s of renowned textile universities were present at the seminar.

On the second day (24 February) of the event leading denim manufacturers, brands visited the Smart-Indigo™ technology at SM Engineering Smart Indigo plant at Mawna, Gazipur. In the plant visit event leading denim manufacturers like Mahmud Denim, Amber Denim, Partex Denim, Ha-Meem Group, Esquire Denim, etc. denim experts, leading brands, different associations were present. Also renowned textile university Vice-Chancellors like Prof MA Kashem, Vice-Chancellor, BUTEX; Prof S. M. Mahfuzur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor, BUFT; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fazli Ilahi, Vice-Chancellor, Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology; Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain, Vice-Chancellor, Northern University; Dr. Md. Abdus Shahid, Head, Department of Textile Engineering, DUET. Government officials, Deputy Directors, Ministry of Textiles officials, and journalists were present at the event.

Why does textile industry need Smart-Indigo™?

The demand for denim continues to grow. Yearly over 15 billion meters of denim fabric are produced with 66’000 tons of indigo powder to create different shades of blue. The famous blue indigo is a powder that needs hazardous chemicals to make it water-soluble for the dyeing process.

After dyeing, tons of wastewater containing these chemicals is discharged into the environment often without treatment. The excessive damages caused by those chemicals and heavy metals, like cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead, and copper are harmful to humans, animals and the environment.

Smart­Indigo™ by Sedo Engineering SA will resolve these issues. This Swiss invention which utilizes a 100­year­old discovery (A. Brochet, 1917). Indigo can be produced with electricity instead of chemicals.
