Time management for effective merchandising

‘Time management’ is the process of organizing and planning how to divide time between specific activities. Time management allows working smarter easier so a person can do more in less time even when time is tight and pressures are high. In garment merchandising the myth is ‘Do more in less time’. Sometimes a merchandiser often feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks, let alone find a moment to relax. So it is very tough to avoid error for him/her when stress & pressures occupies all the work hours.
Efficient time management helps to increase productivity and efficiency, it builds a better professional reputation, reduces stress at and after work. Better management of time brings increased opportunities for career advancement.
Failing to manage time effectively can have some very undesirable consequences like missed deadlines, creates inefficiencies in the work flow, and causes poor quality. Overall it becomes the reason of poor professional reputation and a stalled career adds stress in every levels of life.

Time management is not very difficult as a concept, but it’s surprisingly hard to do in practice. It requires investing little time & doing little until things become as habit. Poetizing & organizing is the basic tools to overcome stress during work process. At the same time, proactive attitude undoubtedly is important for time management progress. The below figure shows the problem faced in the way of time management.
 What skills are required for effective time management
Good time management requires an important shift in focus from activities to results. Prior to work for effective time management the below skills are required to know & practice over it.
  1. Setting goals / task.
  2. Breaking goals down into discreet steps.
  3. Reviewing progress towards goal.
  4. Prioritizing
  5. Organizing work schedule
  6. List making to remind of what need to do & when.
  7. Persevering when things are not working out & avoiding procrastination.

Advantages of using a to do list
  • Focuses mind on important objectives.
  • Less likely to forget to do tasks.
  • Writing a list helps order thoughts.
  • It helps to show the bigger picture.
  • To do list helps & no need to hold everything in head.
  • It saves time.
  • It helps to decide on priorities: the most important and the most urgent.
  • Not to be less likely sidetracked.
  • To get the reward of ticking off achievements.
  • To feel more in control.
  • To keep a record of what have done.
  • Always have something to work on.
How a Merchandiser can achieve TNA by effective time management
A garments merchandiser needs to meet the deadline that he commits to customer. At the same time it is his/her responsibility to manage the people, co-coordinating among the production unit, check back the production progress & get the things done within time frame. In practical, garment industry in general is not all time suitable to meet the dead line. Because most of the items of a garments need to purchase from abroad & so fail to maintain the time frame. So merchandiser needs to follow strong time management as well as make sure others are following.
Another reason for a merchandiser not to meet dead line is ‘Failing to realize the difference between Urgency & importance’. The result is Prioritizing may not be effective to complete task & ultimately live in a rush & run office hour.
Making similar task in a group
To utilize TNA effectively merchandiser should have to group his task together, and do similar tasks consecutively. Suppose fabric booking or trims booking.
In conclusion, a merchandiser can be busy all the day but isn’t the same as being effective. Spending day in a frenzy of activity often achieves less, only good time management lets work smarter easier hence a peaceful life.
