Traditional jamdani fair underway

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy jointly organizing the 10-day jamdani fair from 16 may for the sixth time with 25 stalls to promote Bangladesh’s centuries-old traditional weaving fabric called Jamdani.

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, Industries Minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder and State Minister for Culture Affairs KM Khalid were present at the opening ceremony.

Honorable ministers gave hope to Bangladeshi traditional weavers. The government is working to develop and expand the Jamdani art to maintain the fine of jamdani sarees. The government has set up an industrial estate in Narayanganj to accommodate Jamdani weavers there.

Various types of Jamdani sarees, including Tersa, Jolpar, Pannahazar, Karola, Dublajal, Saburga, Bolihar, Shaplaful, Angurlota, Mayurpachpar, Baghnali, Kalmilota, Chandrapar and Jhumka are being presented in the stalls.

Monia Jamdani House owner Md Monir Hossain said, “Our factory produces all kinds of Jamdani saris. However, there is no demand for expensive saris in the fair.”

He said there was a lack of buyers and visitors in the fair due to minimal publicity regarding the expo.

According to BSCIC Deputy Manager Nasima Akter Previous exhibition center is better than this year exhibition center. People still don’t know about the new placement of the fair. Sales is lower than the previous year.

But exhibitors still hoping for weekend holidays. Most of the sales rise up during weekend holidays.

“We are still hoping of rising in sales from previous years which was almost 1core Tk. But this time outcome may be different from the previous year due to the reduction of 8 stalls of the previous year,” said Nasima Akter.
